i modify mo nalang to fit you needs. you can start by choosing a transistor capable of 3A.

Kahit wala na pass transistor pwede mo ma-achieve ang 3A, yung transistor, dun dadaan ang current mo, kaya pass transistor ang tawag.

kahit wala na dahil 5Amp(yata) ang max current niyan accdg to datasheet

yung circuit kasi ni sir marce LM78XX, 1.5A lang (yata) max current niyan, kaya dadagdagan ng transistor para tumaas.

Ano ito, project? If not, then why not use a PC power supply, high efficiency pa. An old PC enclosure with power supply can be useful. Meron ako nakuha, 50 pesos lang binili ko sa mambobote..then repair ko power supply (fuse lang problema), ayun may 5V at 12V supply na ako...Smiley

A 3 ampere output current is quite high, so It may not be "COOL" to use a linear regulator.  Other regulators if short circuited will enter into constant current mode equal to the output rating of the regulator.

Here is a circuit of a high efficiency switchmode non-isolated buck regulator with a foldback current limiting.
You can download the datasheet of the SH1605 in www.national.com or in www.alldatasheet.com for the specs and the formulas for the appilcation of the power IC.
