Practical applications in a telco enviroment is to test the resistance between the grounding rod of telco cables/poles againts the surrounding soil area.  I used to work with that test equipment a long time ago when I was working for a local telco doing acceptance testing of fiber optic cable installations.  This is to ensure that should lightning strikes or any unforseen electric surges hit the cable or poles, electricity will be dissipated into the earth and does not reach the very expensive equipment at the other ends of the cable.

i remember using this one to measure nga yung resistance ng soil...  para sa grounding ng Lightning protection.  para kang nagtatanim dito eh.

Magkaiba yung Megger at yung Ground Impedance Tester.

Megger is normally used for insulation testing which applies 500V to the device under test. Testing may require some length of time for the insulator to pass.

Ground Impedance Meter is probably what you call soil resistance tester. It has three terminals to connect probes on the soil that could be several feet from each other and supplies AC current for impedance testing. It reads out grounding impedance in ohms for the ground rod under test. Some installations may require an array of metal grids (usually copper), several square meters in area, buried ten feet, to achieve a very low ground impedance (<0.1 ohm).

Two weeks ago, pinainspect ko sa barkada kong electrician ang wiring ng apartment namin dahil parang duda ako sa electric bill namin. Gumamit siya ng megger para ma check ang wirings and may nakita siya na grounded daw na line. Pina verify ko sa apartment maintenance man at nakita nilang solid wire na nakalagay sa flexible tube ang ginamit sa outlet na nagtraverse sa floor. Sabi nila baka raw nasira ang flexible tube nang nabuhusan ng semento. Pinalitan nila ng external wiring ang ground floor outlets namin dahil hindi na nila mahatak ang wire sa loob ng flexible tube.

Under observation ngayon ang power consumption namin.

yong Megger po ay actually brand ng high insulation tester, Megger (USA) ata ang first na nag develop at nag commercialize ng reliable high insulation tester, kaya yon, naging megger ang tawag sa insulation tester (parang yong nangyari sa toothpaste, tawag natin Colgate ), gamit po ito to test High Voltage Equipment insulation level (BIL), it generates high voltage (up to 5kv) to test the insulation (Resistance) ng isang equipment.

kung soil resistance ang hanap mo....kailangan mo ng soil resistance meter, ang gamit namin sa Russia ay Sonel MRU-101, digital na ang read-out nya.....
