I suggest google mo "LED resistor calculator"... Cheesy

i use 300 ohms series for 5V supply....

Ang resistor is used to limit the current going to the LED but not necesarily 220 ohms. Depends on the Voltage that is being used.

This is how to estimate the resistor that will be used as current limiter:

      +12V ------R---->|--------- gnd

assuming we have the circuit with a voltage of 12V and a Resistor in Series with the LED. The maximum current that should pass the LED should not exceed approximately 20mA.

Vcc = 12V
Vr = voltage across the resistor
Ir = current at the resistor
R = current limiting resistor

say:
Vled = 2V        ;voltage across LED. usually the voltage plays from 1.3 to 3 volts (0.75  for normal diodes NOT LED)
Iled  = 15mA    ;current through the LED. this will be the safe current value or lower (check
                      the brightness)

establish first your voltage equation:
    Vcc = Vr  + Vled
    12 = Vr + 2
    Vr = 12 - 2 = 10
    Vr = 10
but
    Vr = Ir x R      but    Ir = Iled = 15mA
     R = Vr / Ir
     R = 10/15mA
     R =  666 ohms  (use the nearest value available, say 570ohms or 680ohms...)
say
     R = 570 ohms

to compute for the current accross the LED using the new Resistor:

from the voltage equation:
        Vcc = Vr + Vled
        Vcc = Iled(R) + Vled
        Vcc - Vled = Iled(R)
thus
        Iled = (Vcc-Vled)/R         where Vled = 2 volts
        Iled = (12 - 2)/570
        Iled = 10/570
        Iled = 0.01754 A = 17mA     safe!   Wink
