On the image D1 is an IR LED and I changed it as IR Photodiode. Do I need protection for my Photodiode para hindi masira?

I would like to ask also kung pareho lang ung potentiometer (R8) sa image sa dalawang 10k ohms na connected sa pin 5 na nakaconnect sa 5v at sa ground respectively?

I would like to comment here for clarifications.. hindi po pala nasira ung photodiode na sensor, instead kapag malapit ako sa araw (lalo na kung umaga) naapektohan ung IR receiver ko kahit na walang araw na directly hitting sa IR receiver ko (ambient light ata?). Yung lugar ng ineeksperimentuhan ko ng sensors mdju 5m near to the rays of the sun.
