Developing code for "humans" since 2004

WWW
« on: July 07, 2010, 10:29:57 PM »

May pinagaapplyan kasi ako work abroad and part of the application process eh nagrequest sila ng sample code na nagcocompute ng RMS ng AC using a specific processor and compiler.

As proof na gumagana yun nagprovide din ako ng spreadsheet simulating the response of my formula.

i think kung ang purpose nila is to test your abilities, to see if you really are the person they're looking for  di yan magagalit.

Ano ba purpose ng "sample code",  to test you or for their own selfish gains? diba?

Grin

You could give them the compiled hex code with the schematic diagram of the system.
Then show snippets of your program source where there is intensive computation/algorithm.
And describe the theory on how it is done but not the complete program.

I wouldn't mind giving them everything they requested. That would be better than giving them a half-working code and a bad impression. Even if they are able to use the code, chances are they will need your help in the future for upgrading. That will increase your chances of being hired.

And I am speaking from experience.

ipinaliwanag ko naman rationale bakit hindi ko ginawa yun and may proof ako na gumagana yun through spreadsheet.

@master Zer0W1ng

Grin

Nangyari na yan sa akin. Ipinagawa ako ng VBA MACRO sa excel spreadsheet for acceptance and compliance sampling sa metering as requirement for my job application as Metering Technologist.

It's like Prometheus giving them the fire.

Grin

sa business point of view naman, much more willing pa kung gusto mo talaga 'yung project/client. you may lose the deal or you may gain it, risk taking, pero kung nakuha naman, mas malaki ang gain. ngayon kung gagamitin nila 'yung sample na product/project/service at 'di ka na binalikan (posibleng kumuha lang ng idea at pinagawa sa iba), alam mo na kung sino ang mga client na dapat iwasan at pwedeng gumawa 'to ng negative feedback sa kanila sa supplier circle.

I would agree with sir rdpzycho. There is always a risk if you give things away for free. But there is a saying nothing ventured, nothing gained. You don't have to give your crown jewels. You can supply something that is basically working but would need your help to turn into a finished product. Kung baga, "proof of concept".

Also, designs are not static. There is always the next generation model. So basically, the design/idea you are giving away is yesterday's design. If they can make your idea work, more likely they will have to turn to you for the next upgrade. If you will lose out, I think may pogi points pa rin earned.

Marami akong naging project na I have to turn over all designs, schematics and source codes. Even so, in the end it is best to go back to the original designer for the upgrade. And you can make a living doing that as I have.
