I was with ch 38 OMEGA around 1979. it  was a blast!

We even used to get sporadic E from davao stations back then when the sunspot cycle was at it peak.

I then discovered ham radio and became an associate member of para when they were still at the philcomcen building at ortigas with the 144.74 repeater.

I monitored cb bands lately with my ham gear and found no operators from manila just taiwanese fishing boats probably fishing our waters and hauling all the tuna to taiwan.

ch.38 in the late 70's omega was established in the proj4 cinco hermanos area. dumami to at some members from malolos, bulacan went on to from the apocalypse group. for a long time there was a parallel growth in both groups establishing chapters in different areas from laguna to olongapo. I remember my first convoy to malolos and masarap talaga ensaymada doon.  By the time cb was losing popularity, the only active groups were outside metro manila.  Some migrated to vhf or uhf or hf,  some married people they met in the radio club while some "outgrew" radio and into the baul went a lot of cb rigs.

some notable omega stations:
omega five star  caltex station at connecticut corner edsa with starduster
omega moon base caltex station at rosario (ortigas ext) pasig with a moonraker six beam (cousin to founder of apocalypse in bulacan)
omega central -- the very first base station of the group (astroplane)
omega monitor -- run by a guy from malabon - now operates a fishing fleet (married a "good lady" from the group)
and many other personalities.

ahhhh memories....

at the time i was active on cb (i started transmitting in 1983 ), it was the omega laguna chapter (mostly members from cabuyao and calamba) that was active on ch. 38 (i met some of them). though we both shared the same frequency there was no incident of misunderstanding (as far as i could remember), well i guess it was the respect from both group. i was affiliated with cavite chapter for 3 years (1985-88) before we formed metro south chapter. i migrated to amateur radio in 1994.

it was really fun and i enjoyed it. and yes... it was really an unforgettable memories.

Hi!

great to know we are from the same "cb-ham" blood line!

"CB-hams" is a unique phenomenon. CB was designed to be a utilitarian service by the FCC way way back. Ihave info that the o 27mhz band used to be part of the old amateur radio bands but was reallocated to the "new service". Old hams complained but were unable to do anything.
well cb grew and in a big way, all throuout the world, thankds to relatively cheap equipment antenna sizes which were managaeble, etc. when the cb guys discovered the skip (ionospheric) propagation, the band became even more popular. So more and more cb'ers went into hobby type communications.. for the fun of it. Well as you know amateur radio is basically hobby type operaion, so sooner or later that portion of the cb community inevitable migrated to amateur radio in a big way too.
So the loss  to amateur radio of the 27mhz band was "repaid" by the migration of a lot of cb ers to the ham community. And the form a large part of the die hard amateur radio hobbyist  today.
