always remember to check component datasheets kapag nagde-design.  'yang dalawang opto can handle few mA, around 50mA, kaya kailangan mo pa rin 'yung 2N2222.

are you trying to implement a dimmer via the parallel port or just simply turn the light on or off? anyways, about using opto-coupler/opto-isolators, here goes.. using your first schematic diagram as guide, disconnect r6 from parallel port and connect it to the opto's emitter. connect opto's collector to +12V.(assuming your opto is NPN output) connect the opto's LED to the parallel port through an appropriate current limiting resistor. just make sure that the value of r6 is low enough to saturate the 2222 but high enough not to exceed the opto's maximum collector current. as for the circuit involving the triac, you could eliminate the relay and the 2222, and trigger the triac directly with an opto isolator with triac output such as moc3043/moc3081 just as the masters have suggested.

ang project mo ay gagamit ng ac mains na mataas ang voltahe which is dangerous payo ko lang before you build and test your design be sure to submit your design to your instructor for approval.

separate the grounds of both sides of the opto-isolator, ie. pin 3 ground should connect to and only to the parallel port ground. the ground of the rest of the circuit should never be connected to the parallel port ground. using common ground negates the purpose of the opto-isolator. still i suggest moc3081/3041 type for the triac gate drive, eliminating the relay associated with the triac.
edit: If the triac is a part of a standalone dimmer circuit not to be "dimmed" by the pc, then i think your good to go.

^mali pa rin sa triac ckt. the moc should be at the gate ckt of the triac, not in series with the load. check the datasheet of moc3041 for application hints.. ( http://www.datasheetcatalog.org/datasheet/motorola/MOC3042.pdf page4) current limiting resistor is also missing on the led of your moc3041.

imho, there is no need for ic1. if rl1 and rl2 are off, then the triac is off. lowest setting rl1 on rl2 off, med setting rl2 on rl1 off, higest setting rl1 and rl2 on.. ito po ba ang design goal nyo?

MOC3041 sa Triac, refer to the circuit in the datasheet.
ok na 'yung MOC3041 sa Triac at 'yung 4N25 sa relay nung 12V. dalawang opto lang bali ang kailangan mo.

fran2no - If you already have the relays there is no need for optocouplers because relays are isolators too like optocouplers. Below is your circuit which I modified to simplify it but still able achieve your objectives. For clarity I did not show the power supply section. If the concern is protecting your PC port from the 12V that could go into the port pin in case of transistor failure the easiest and cheapest protection you can use is a 1N4148 diode in series with the base drive resistor as shown in the circuit below. Since you intend NOT to use the dimmer function then you can simplify the lamp control section as shown below. You use the relay to turn the triac on instead of an opto triac-driver. For the motor control, you may also replace the relay with a PNP power transistor but this transistor must be able to handle the current of the motor. If you are interested in this apporach let me know.
