Hello guys..

i need your help regarding my project in Data Comm.

how do you setup a ring topology?

i know it needs 2 lan cards.

Ordinary ethernet LAN cards works in STAR topology configuration.

To do a ring topology using ethernet, you need 2 cards per node and a specialized software to pass and repeat data to the next node.
Like this:
Code:
+---o-NODE1-o------------o-NODE2-o------------o-NODE3-o-+
|                                                       |
|                                                       |
+-------------------------------------------------------+

At least 3 nodes/PCs are needed to simulate RING topology.

ahuh..

so i should have two network connections in one pc, right?
one for the receive and one for the transmit..

how do i make sure that one network connection is for the receive or transmit only?

what should i write on the subnet mask, default gateway and DNS server?

You can create a L3 ring network with at least 3 pcs with dual nics.  Actually pwede na 2 pcs but you wont be able to show the fault resiliency of a ring topology.  Enable ip forwarding and configure static routing.

Note1:  Gamit na lang kayo ng vmware to implement this to save on actual h/w.
Note2:  Mas maigi gumamit ng linux instead of windows dahil linux supports l2 and l3 protocols and can be configured as a router.
Note3:  Don't bridge the NICs of the pcs kung naka-ring ka unless you are running L2 stp protocol on the pc/server.  You'll be creating an endless broadcast loop if you do that.

Vmware is not needed if you have at least 2 or 3 actual PCs.  I just suggested that kung walang physical pcs to simulate the ring topology.

You have to run certain L2 STP protocol and L3 routing protocol s/w sa windows otherwise puros static routing lang ang pwede mo gawin.  And I am not aware of any opensoure and free L2/L3 protocol s/w for widows.  And of course you have to enable ip forwarding (through the windows registry).

Sa linux, may mga free and readily available s/w apps for the L2/L3 protocols.

ah i see.

kung di po kasi ako familiar masyado sa linux, anung flavor po kaya magandang gamitin?
i boot na lang po namin mula sa flash drive yun magiging linux na OS.

at least 4 nodes po ang kailangan.

may ma susuggest po ba kayo SW for L2/L3 network?

Frankly speaking,  I really dont know.   It all depends on the capability of the h/w and s/w.  Most h/w and their f/w and the accompanying pc driver/sw on typical laptops usually just support a single adhoc connection.

If the h/w on the laptop is capable and supports a s/w accesspoint feature and not just as a client, then it could support multiple adhoc connections and mesh would be possible.  But I haven't had any  experienced with this yet.

Many prefer to use ubuntu nowadays, but I never got used to ubuntu.  I use Fedora Core from which Redhat Linux is based.  The common routing s/w available for Linux are Zebra and Quagga.
