Honorary Board of Advisers

Dr. Jose B. Cruz Jr.

Dr. Cruz obtained a Bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude from the University of the Philippines, a Master’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Cruz is currently a Distinguished Professor of Engineering and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Ohio State University, where he previously served as Dean of the College of Engineering. Earlier he was a Professor at the University of California, Irvine, and Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Dr. Cruz authored or coauthored six books and approximately 300 journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters on sensitivity analysis, use of feedback for maintenance of near-optimality, and dynamic games.

Dr. Cruz served as President of the IEEE Control Systems Society, Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, a member of the IEEE Board of Directors, IEEE Vice President for Technical Activities, and IEEE Vice President for Publication Activities. He also served as Chair of the Engineering Section of AAAS.

Dr. Cruz is a Life Fellow of IEEE, and he is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society for Engineering Education, and the International Federation on Automatic Control. He has received a number of awards, including the IEEE Richard M. Emberson Award; the ASEE Curtis W. McGraw Research Award; and the American Automatic Control Council Richard E. Bellman Control Heritage Award. He was elected as a Member of the National Academy of Engineering in 1980, and elected as Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Science and Technology (of the Philippines) in 2003.

Dr. Marcelo H. Ang Jr.

Dr. Ang received the B.S. degrees (Cum Laude) in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management Engineering from the De La Salle University, Manila, Philippines, in 1981; the M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Un iversity of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1985; and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York, in 1986 and 1988, respectively. His work experience include heading the Technical Training Division of Intel's Assembly and Test Facility in the Philippines, research positions at the East West Center in Hawaii and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a faculty position as an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Rochester, New York. In 1989, Dr. Ang joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the National University of Singapore, where he is currently an Associate Professor. In addition to academic and research activities, he is actively involved in the Singapore Robot ic Games as its founding chairman. His research interests span the areas of robotics, mechatronics, automation, computer control, and applications of intelligent systems methodologies.

Dr. Dave A. Cartes

Dr. David Cartes, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering in January 2001, after receiving his Ph.D. in Engineering Science from Dartmouth College. Dr. Cartes heads the Power Controls Lab at the Center for Advanced Power Systems. He teaches courses in control systems, dynamics, and acoustics. His research interests include Real-Time System Identification and Adaptive Control, Distributed Control and Reconfigurable Systems, Advanced Power Systems (Electrical and Mechanical) Control, and Active Control of Sound and Vibration. In 1994, Dr. Cartes completed a 20-year career in the U.S. Navy. As a Repair Officer, specialized in the repair of nuclear powered ships, he managed the conversion, overhaul, and repair of complex marine propulsion systems. His at-sea experience includes two submarines, the USS Nathaniel Greene and the USS San Juan, and the guided missile cruiser USS Mississippi, which served in the First Persian Gulf War.
