Fellow engineers,

I need enlightenment why non salient is use for high speed and salient rotor for low speed generators.. I know the constructions of the two rotor design. I tried to find explanation why it is used for certain kind of generator.. Thanks in advance..

Salient pole construction, where the field windings are on pole pieces attached to a rotor body, is used on lower speed machines., 1200rpm and less, because of its lower cost.Round rotor construction, where the field windings are inserted in axial slots in a cylindrical rotor body, is used on essentially all 2 pole machines and on the larger 4 pole machines, because solutions to the problems of attaching salient poles to rotor bodies of such high speed machines become impracticable. The fundamentals of stator core and winding construction for these two types of designs are the same

salient pole - pole pieces bolted/clamped to the rotor shaft.  ->not strong enough for high centrifugal force, hence up to medium speed lng. low cost.
cylindrical rotor (non-salient pole) - more solid construction. laminated sheets are packed to the shaft. -> extremely rigid to endure high centrifugal force, hence used for high speed gens.  higher cost.

More like Physical features and economic considerations.. I find this making sense a lot..

The more salient the operation, the lesser the number of poles, the higher its synchronous speed.
