Ultra-compact banks of 2 to over 32 frequency-locked RF synthesizers can be built in 2-channel increments, using a Synth300-TRIG-HS PCI master card and any number of SYNTH300-TRIG 2-channel slave boards. The Synth300-TRIG-HS PCI dual-channel Direct Digital Synthesizers (DDS) master card incorporates two independent DDSs synchronized to an on-board low-phase-noise SAW-stabilized 1GHz timebase, each channel separately programmable for frequencies between 300 KHz and 300 MHz in 0.233 Hz increments. Multiple Synth300-TRIG boards can be slaved to this master board, or an external oscillator of up to 1GHz, enabling a large number of frequency-locked channels to be installed in any low-cost PCI PC chassis, achieving what the company believes is a unique degree of miniaturization and cost-efficiency for RF signal generation.

in addition to single or multiple channel RF generation (+4dBm into 50 ohms), the SYNTH300-TRIG series can generate advanced RF signals such as triggered dwell/sweep/dwell quadrature swept signaling useful in Communications, RADAR, RF ATE, and other advanced applications. Additionally, by utilizing the 4 independent user-defined frequency/phase profiles associated with each dual synthesizer, frequency and/or phase modulated waveforms (4-FSK, 4-PSK) can be easily generated and controlled via software or external TTL inputs. In addition to its two sine-wave RF outputs, each Synth300-TRIG also includes an LVDS port, allowing the user to create a programmable digital clock with precise frequency and phase adjustment capability. Software provided includes a simple-to-use Windows™ GUI to quickly configure most applications, as well as example C code, for Linux and Windows™ to allow programming of advanced applications.

Each DDS-based synthesizer holds up to 4 independent frequency/phase profiles. Profile switching can be accomplished via host system software control or by external TTL frequency/phase profile switching inputs, allowing phase and/or frequency to be changed in as little as 8 nanoseconds, for applications in which the time uncertainty of software controlled frequency/phase selection is not acceptable.

Designed for low jitter operation in communications, industrial, military/aerospace, educational and scientific applications, the Synth300-TRIG-HS series finds applications in areas such as:

Advanced RF system development and implementation in RADAR and SIGINT applications

RF component test such as verification of phase/frequency detection device operation.

ADC/DAC data acquisition systems in which a programmable timebase is required.

Simulation of oscillator drift on a circuit or system during design and testing.

Examination of spectral response of circuits, devices, or materials

Low cost manufacturing test/QA instrumentation using multiple synthesizers in a host computer

The Synth300-TRIG-HS operates under Linux as well as Windows 7™, Vista™ or XP™. Most synthesis applications can be easily configured by means of the GUI provided. For more complex applications, example C programs may be easily edited and recompiled using common C compilers to create a dedicated executable. A library of C-coded functions and driver are also included.

The Synth300-TRIG-HS and SYNTH300-TRIG provide the functionality of much more expensive test equipment in a much smaller form factor (single-height PCI boards). The Synth300-TRIG HS dual channel master is priced at $2995 each, and each 2-channel PCI expansion board is priced at $2495 each. Delivery is from stock. Quantity discounts are available in quantities as small as 2 units.

The ALD series of multi-output dc/dc backlight LED drivers serve the steady migration from cold cathode florescent backlighting of LCD displays to LED backlights. These drivers are specifically designed for LED backlighting of LCD displays that are now used in industrial and consumer applications. The series includes models for backlight LEDs arranged in two-, three-, and four-string configurations. The drivers feature dimming controls with resistive, analog or PWM inputs that provide LED brightness control. Each output provides up to 140-mA constant-current drive to backlight LEDs that can be connected in series and parallel configurations.

The LED drivers operate with an input voltage of from 10.8 to 13.2 Vdc and have a maximum open-circuit output voltage of 42 to 44 Vdc. The series are 5.0 to 5.5 mm thick and mount behind LCD screens. The two- and three-string models measure 21.5 x 85-mm, and the four-string drivers are 50 x 100 mm. The drivers feature remote on/off input and an overvoltage alarm output. They are convection cooled and operate in ambient temperatures ranging from –30° to 85°C without deratings. Typical operating efficiencies are 90%. The drivers suit backlighting LCD panels used in vending machines, industrial touchscreens, POS terminals, and programmable controllers.
The SM Series from Stackpole is a molded surface mount wirewound resistor with compliant terminations. This technology and lead design offer a significant advantage over large case size ceramic chips in that they are far more robust. Large case size chips are susceptible to cracking and solder joint failure due to differences in thermal expansion properties of the ceramic chips and the PCB’s on which they are mounted. Conversely, the compliant termination of the SM Series is able to flex with the board and shows very little resistance shift due to temperature cycling after more than 3,000 cycles. These terminations make the SM Series a very popular product for automotive and commercial vehicle under the hood applications such as engine control modules, as well as a wide variety of industrial power and control applications. The SM Series can be manufactured with Ayrton Perry non-inductive windings to reduce inductance and can be customized with a variety of different fusing characteristics.

Kicking off a new line of products for growing energy-related markets, Cirrus Logic Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS) today unveiled the industry’s first digital power factor correction (PFC) controller ICs that surpass analog PFCs on performance and price. The CS1500 and CS1600 offer power supply and lighting ballast system designers improved performance and simplified designs compared to legacy analog PFC products. Both ICs are priced on par with analog PFCs, while also lowering the overall bill of materials by up to $0.25.

PFC is required in many electronic applications around the world, as global regulations are pushing to improve the overall efficiency of the utility grid. Analog PFC chips are nearing the end of their capabilities to meet increasingly strict global regulatory requirements and efficiency standards, and new digital solutions enable continued performance and feature improvements designed to meet future market demands.

“Global regulations for power efficiency will become increasingly more challenging long term, and we expect a transition in the PFC market away from analog and into digital PFC products, just as the digital transition has transformed many other markets,” said Linnea Brush, senior research analyst, Darnell Research.

Featuring the new EXL Core™ architecture, with its currently 53 patented and patent-pending digital algorithm technologies, the CS1500 and CS1600 have the advantage over analog products of being able to intelligently solve increasingly complex power management challenges. Through its patent-pending digital noise shaping technology, both the CS1500 and CS1600 enable reduced-sized EMI filters, which cut the need for additional high-priced components and circuitry. Additionally, these digital ICs improve energy efficiency across all load conditions, with a distinct performance advantage in light load conditions, and simplify system designs by reducing external component count by more than 30 percent.

“We’re bringing disruptive digital technology to applications that are currently dominated by analog solutions,” said Jason Rhode, president and chief executive officer, Cirrus Logic. “Until today, no one has been able to develop a digital PFC controller that offers both performance improvements and cost savings compared to analog-based PFCs.”

For more information on global regulations and power consumption challenges within applications, see the Cirrus Logic White Paper: The Digital Imperative: The Rising Wave in Power Factor Correction (PFC) Techniques.

As global regulatory agencies drive improved efficiency requirements in consumer products, the total PFC market is anticipated to expand from 1.2 billion units in 2009 to 2.4 billion units in 2013, according to Ryan Sanderson, senior research analyst, IMS Research.

“Looking ahead, we’re developing a strong roadmap of digital energy control products, focusing on solving real-world challenges through innovative signal processing technologies in new markets that will help drive our long-term growth,” Rhode added.
