CCS announces the release of version 4.100 for all CCS C Compilers in June 2009. This release includes many new and exciting features, functionality and support.

CCS has improved string-handling functions to be optimized built-in functions that will accept any combination of constant and variable arguments. The new compiler also includes an optimized printf, including string compression for 7-bit ASCII strings on

14-bit opcode parts. Many printf strings will take half of the ROM space on most PIC® microcontrollers from Microchip Technology.

The newly added syntax extensions will allow the use of some standard operators, such as +, = and ==, directly on strings. Powerful syntax extensions also permit the use of strings in a switch statement, providing an easy to use and efficient string comparison.

Additionally, version 4.100 includes support for the enhanced Mid-range family of PIC microcontrollers, including large arrays and built-in functions such as a context switch. The compiler includes a library for #USE TOUCH_PAD for capacitive touch-sensing. PIC microcontrollers with the onboard mTouch™ module, such as the PIC16F727, will utilize internal features when available.

“CCS has always offered unique value to Microchip’s customers,” said Derek Carlson, vice president of Microchip’s Development Tools group. “We are pleased that the CCS C Compiler now supports our enhanced Mid-range PIC microcontrollers. The support is timely and welcome.”

Version 4.100 will be available to any customer on active maintenance.

Summit Microelectronics has expanded its third-generation programmable battery charger integrated circuit (IC) family with the introduction of the SMB329. Based on the award winning, highly-integrated SMB339 family, the SMB329 integrates additional features, such as “instant-on”, even with a dead battery, and real-time charge current monitoring. Like its predecessors, the SMB329’s parameters are programmable in non-volatile memory for power-up configuration, and in volatile memory for in-system adjustments via the I2C host interface. In addition, high-efficiency switch-mode operation and TurboCharge™ mode allow for thirty to fifty percent shorter charging times, while reducing thermal dissipation and wasted power by 80%. The SMB329 supports all relevant interface (USB2.0, USB OTG, USB charging, etc.) and safety (IEEE1725, JICS8714, etc.) standards, resulting in reduced development time and cost associated with system compliancy efforts. Additionally, the SMB329 supports the industry’s environmental and Green efforts by enabling universal USB charging, eliminating electronic waste while dramatically reducing energy usage (www.summitmicro.com/mobilegreen).

Single-IC USB isolator is industry’s first

Simplifying isolated USB-port implementation in system-critical medical and industrial equipment, the ADuM4160 USB 2.0-compliant isolator provides fully isolated USB functionality at a fraction of the cost and complexity of current data isolation methods reducing implementation costs by up to 25%, size of designs by as much as 50%, and development time from months to weeks. Previously, medical designs have typically used isolated RS-232 or Ethernet connections that limit data transfer rates, do not support plug-and-play functionality, and take up excessive space. Based on the company’s iCoupler digital isolation technology, the device offers 5-kVrms medical-grade isolation, upstream short-circuit protection, and fully isolated 1.5-and 12-Mbit/s data rates (IEC 60601-1 medical safety approvals pending). It operates off the 5-V USB supply or system-supplied 3.3-V power using an internal regulator and also provides isolated control of the pull-up resistor, allowing the peripheral to control connection timing. Housed in a 16-lead SOIC package, the device offers an idle current of 2 mA max, further eliminating the need for a suspend state. ($4.89 ea/1,000 prod qty, June 2009.)
