Plano, TX — Texas Advanced Optoelectronic Solutions Inc. (TAOS) announced the industry’s first dual-source agreement for ambient light sensors with Avago Technologies. The two companies worked together in joint recognition of the growing demand for second sourcing of ambient light sensors used in high-volume display applications, such as cell phones, computer monitors and LCD displays.

According to the terms of the agreement, the two companies will provide a true dual source for a family of ambient light sensors that combine the TAOS light-sensing circuit-design technology with Avago’s packaging technology. Dual sourcing will benefit this growing high-volume market because the products will come from completely independent supply chains, from the wafer processing to the final testing of the product.

“Ambient light sensor technology is one of the attractive methods to reduce the liquid crystal display power consumption,” said Jennifer Colegrove, Senior Analyst at iSuppli Corp., who authored the iSuppli Low-Power and Zero-Power Display report. “It adaptively dims the backlight in response to ambient luminance to provide low power consumption and good readability. Low power consumption displays mean longer battery life for mobile devices. At iSuppli, we see more and more mobile handsets and notebook computers are adopting the use of ambient light sensors. For example, Apple’s iPhone has a built-in ambient light sensor for power saving.”

The first dual-source device resulting from this agreement is TAOS part number TSL2563CL or Avago part number APDS-9300. This is a Digital Ambient Light Sensor with I2C interface packaged in a 6-pin ChipLED surface mount package measuring 2.6 mm by 2.2 mm and is well-suited for use in LCD monitors, flat-panel televisions and cell phones.

“TAOS is proud to join Avago Technologies in the very first dual-source agreement for ambient light sensors that is a form, fit and function drop-in replacement,” said Kirk Laney, President and CEO of TAOS Inc. “The combination of the Avago innovative packaging technology with the TAOS world-class leadership in light sensing technology makes for a winning team. Moreover, it is additional proof that integrated optoelectronics, traditionally considered a niche technology, has now taken its place in the mainstream electronics marketplace.”

“Avago Technologies believes that the combined strengths of the two companies makes this dual-source agreement a natural fit to meet ongoing customer needs,” said Tze-Siong Chong, Vice President & General Manager, Optical Communications Solutions Division, Avago Technologies. “We are pleased to be working with TAOS, Inc. and are confident that this ambient light sensing dual-source agreement will be a win-win situation for Avago and TAOS as we meet the growing needs of our customers.”
